There is prob a coin stuck under the ash tray, remove the shifter surround and remove the coin(s)...
I had the same issue and as soon as the coins came out it was good as new.

It appears to just be sticky like soda and crud got stuck in the
side of the tray. usually when you push in on it it slides right back out at you. This one goes in a little and then refuses to come out.

hm I still say foreign object, that's precisely what my friends did...
you could push it back, and it did nothing.
seriously though, remove the shifter surround and give it a little tug if you can get to it, or pry on it a bit, it's pretty tough.
