Default 2nd Gear / Tranny Probs

Anyone who has had 2nd gear or other tranny probs please speak up now, I need some "ammo" in dealing with a "voided warranty" issue.

Default I did... my 1st/2nd gear synchro slider wedged. They replaced it, along with 1st and 2nd gears.

All under warranty.

Interesting...didn't replace the whole unit. Were 1st and 2nd messed up bad?

Default Not really... I think they did it as a precautionary measure...

I didn't realise that ONE GEAR was like $500 tho... sheesh.

I can't imagine how expensive a complete, new tranny is!

I haven't had any tranny problems since the replacement (happened at 30k, I'm at 46k now)

Default WHAT? For a gear, come on. so...

how hard were you driving the car before that happened? Hard downshifts?

later,
Mike

Default nope, not at all

When it happened, I was accel. pretty hard, but it was around a right-hand turn, and when I went to shift to 2nd it ground hard and then went THUNK and popped into N

My guess is it didn't like shifting when in the turn or something (extra G-forces made the synchro slider wedge or something? I dunno)

But since the replacement I've autox'd the car w/o any tranny issues *shrug* and there are plenty of g-forces there

Default Hehe... I actually had my tranny "wedge" once before -- at like 17k miles...

but it unwedged with some coaxing and all was good until 30k miles, when it completely broke

The tech working on my car said that the synchro slider was made of a softish metal, and so this kind of thing can happen...

I took a pic of my slider gears, but you can't see much, since they were just wedged together on the shaft:

Default Was hoping you'd put up a pic....

can't see any rotational damage. The one on the left...those lower teeth aren't damaged, are they?

Thanks Taner,
mike
