I thought it was because they measure different, DIN rather than SAE?

Default Lets not start with "common AW knowledge"....:)

The reason I was asking that according to SAE every car manufacturer rates their cars as per their own testing procedures based on SAE, DIN, JIS standards.

SAE and AUDI USA could not specify octane, those tests were performed on.

I thought that you have "an access to the inside information" or something...

Min octane rating required is not an indication that engine is rated at that number. I doubt that Toyota Camry's max power is rated on 87 octane.

We all remember case of Mazda RX8 with two reductions of official HP rating, which was not attributed to the gas octane number BTW.

Default No real difference. The Euro test is run on higher octane fuel. On the same fuel, both the US and

Euro car should put out about the same power. I've driven stock Euro S4's and they are no different than American cars. The US cars are "underrated".

In most areas around Germany, 100 octane is the hot stuff. :-)

Default I'd have to suspect there is some minimal software tuning differences...

...because in 2003 for the U.S. A6 2.7T, they came out with a 2.7T+ rated for the original Euro 265hp/295 lb-ft specs, and owners did report it as having more of a butt-dyno impact than previous "underrated" 250hp/258 lb-ft U.S. spec cars.
