By pushing down the fingers and moving the grey piece on the inside it will compress the yellow springs?
I understand it is hard to press the fingers to get the sac to adjust in the correct place.
Do I have the correct idea or am I really off?

You should have two flat screwdrivers to push the springs back, pick any two of the three openings where to adjust the ring from. The reason you need two people is because once you have the springs pushed back, you have to release the pressure on the pressure plate fingers, and that is hard to do if you've already got both hands in use.
