For instance, I upgraded the turbo, exhaust manifold, downpipe, cat-back, etc myself on my '97 Talon, something I'd be loath to try on my S4.
Considerably lighter than the S4, and they handle snow well.

PS: DSM=Talon/Eclipse.

the snow is something like a Viper with super wide tires, or something like a modified Supra or Porsche 930 Turbo with a peaky turbo.
A Civic with a NA motor and snow tires will be more than adequate in the snow.

... at least for a car that's actually set up for the track. Think about it: track car = low, stiff... winter car should be softly sprung, pothole-tolerant...
But if you had to, I'd go with an E30 :-)
I've driven mine in boston and vermont for the winter for three years, and it's great fun. Not a problem with good snow tires.

But then again, if your arithmetic says (rwd = awd) and (rwd > fwd) for snow, maybe it's not surprising. :P

I didn't want to be risking my S4 anymore, nor the expensive tires, brakes, etc.
So I picked up a beater, well actually 2 beaters. A 89 CRX Si and a 93 Civic hatch. Both have rollbars for safety. The CRX is a fun car stock, assuming you're not on wornout suspension. Just empty out the junk you don't need to lighten up the car.
In stockform, the hatch is very lacking in low end torque, but that'll be fixed soon.
Just get some track wheels ($300/set), a decent suspension ($700), pads ($40) and you're set.
Track parts for both cars are INCREDIBLY cheap, and there's plenty of used parts on the market.
Just buy someone's slightly used winter wheels for $50 and you're set for snow.
