Default just fix it...it's probably not too bad

that's what the rest of us would do. even if it costs too much....you already spent tons of dough to get to this point. the probability that it will catch fire again is pretty limited.

why should you get off so easy? jk ;-(

Default Either way,I hope it works out for the best. I had the same symtoms on my car It just started..

smoking like crazy right under the MAF above the passenger side turbo out from under the right front wheel-well. I quickly pulled out of the garage and took everything out of it of value. Thank god it never went to flames but it scared me to think that it could go up again.
Well after that, I found that the foil heat resistant carboard lining that runs along close to the downpipes had started smoldering and would have gone up had it been a few more seconds/minutes with engine running. This foil seemed to have come loose and was touching the downpipe right next to the turbo. I got it all staighten away and since then no problems. I know how you feel about hoping that it was totaled but.....it might be something relatively easy to fix and still live with.
