It will be hard to find a car in great condition for that price. Also, since mods for this car are pretty expensive, it would be tricky to find a car in great shape and still have much money left over from 20k for any substantial mods.
Also - when you post, please use the subject line. Makes things easier for the rest of us.

ideal if you could get VAG-COM to see if there are any codes... Check for busted motor mounts, too.
Here was my experience last year:
Flew to Baltimore for a good deal. Car drove a bit rougher than the 2 others I had test driven and it had the check engine light (CEL) on.... well, I bought it anyway. The price was just too good for one with 50K miles. They had it listed in their system as an A4 - hence, the lower list price. As they were doing the title, I had to tell the guy to redo it as an S4, not A4. LOL. Plus, it had some smart mods already done. I got lucky that the CEL was no big deal. I saved some cash, like you want to do, and am extremely happy! Sure, maintenence is a biatch, but it's an AWESOME car.
Don't let them scare you! ;-)

Something will always go wrong with you car, that's just the way these cars are.
So either accept it or buy a Honda
