Advice: When replacing inner CV boot, is it easier to remove entire axle, or just drop the inside.

Advice: When replacing inner CV boot, is it easier to remove entire axle, or just drop the inside.
To further clarify...Is it easier to remove the entire axle and then replace the boot on a workbench. Or, is it easier to simply drop the inner portion,lowering it enought to replace the boot? Thanks in advance.
