I live in the Netherlands and all the advice available to me here is either in German or Dutch. Being from an English background, I live here in pure ignorance (or as I like to call it: Bliss).
I have a Chip from an Austrian company (In-motion) and another from a German company (both approx the same rating - 310 BHP) and they cause my car to go into limp mode after variable durations. When this happens, I reset the car by removing the negative terminal of the battery and I get my power back.
When I plug it into the computer at Audi, they tell me it has over boost problems but are unable to identify which component is failing and unwilling to do anything until I downgrade the chip. They then hand me a bill for about a hundred bucks and ask me to leave.
I still have the old chip but would hate to down grade. Any advise? It's a 98 2.7 V6 biturbo Avant in black with furry dice and everything. I have attached a nice pic as a treat for you.
Thanks in advance.

I am going to post your request to the www.Audiworld.com <http://www.Audiworld.com> forum because that will add a lot of other resources to your question. I would recommend that you subscribe to it as well.
If you hare hitting a limp home mode, your problem is serious and you should not drive the car much at all until you resolve the problem. You could be damaging your turbos.
In order to properly diagnose this problem we need more information. First what year is your car and what version is your ECU (look at the part number and let us know what the last letter is on the part number. Second is your car a manual or tiptronic. Third, what other engine modifications have you done?
Next, we need to know more about the problem. Please detail the condition you call "Limp home mode". Does the build any boost at all? Will you please describe the conditions that cause this mode? Can you replicate it? Can you please provide the DTC code the dealer is saying is generated in the ECU (I assume you do not have VAG-Com or something similar).
Then we need to determine whether the problem is related to the aftermarket chips or if it is something with your car. Does the problem exist with both aftermarket chips? Can you duplicate the problem with the OEM chip (it may be more subtle with the lower boost OEM chip)?
You should also test your system for pressure leaks, check the function of the bypass valves, and inspect the throttle body boot for tears. Then you should test your boost control system.

First, get the VAG-COM from Ross-Tech so you can see what codes are being thrown.
Then compare these to the Factory repair manual, which will tell you exactly what is going on and how to fix it. The repair manual can be ordered from here: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/bcd_order.html

IIRC, European cars only have a 1 year warranty and even if they do have longer warranties, his car is a 98, so he'd be well out of any factory warranty period.
That said, if he has the stock ecu, I see no reason to try it out and see if the problems occur with it in. If so, he can go back to the dealer and have them find the problem.
Alternatively, check the usual things (TBB, F-hose, possibly N75 since it is overboosting).
