Default If it gets to be AWD + Chains required, you probably really shouldn't be out driving. They usually

close the roads anyways then.

I'm getting snows put on my stock wheels in the next week or so (once I hear back from my friend at wheelworks), and new summer wheels/tires in the spring. I'll be spending a week or so in Tahoe later on, plus the weekend trips when I can make it, thus the reasoning for the snows. All-seasons would probably work also, but I'd just feel safer with full snow tires.

Default I tried Michelin Pilot XGT Z4's as "ultra-high performance all seasons":

they were very good in the dry & wet, but pretty marginal in snow, especially for braking (this was on a previous fwd car, not my S4). If it were me, I'd get some real winter tires rather than relying upon all-seasons.

Good luck

Default I considered the Sport A/S too but here's the logic behind my recent purcahse.

I decided not to buy the Pilot Sport A/S for a couple reasons.

The first was I was not comfortable making any performance compromises driving this car... summer or winter. The Pilot Sport A/S are great tires, made with state of the art manufacturing processes, but they are a compromise for dry handling verses wet handing. And remember they still don't do squat on ice or packed snow... only light snow according to Michelin.

My second reason was price. At $212 a tire the set would cost me over $900 shipped, then I have to pay some wrench monkey another hundred dollars to get them mounted. For just over $1000 I was able to get a new set of 16" AT Atalia S5 wheels and 205/55/16 Blizzak LM-22 tires, plus a torque wrench to put them on myself.

So now I have a car that makes absolutely no compromises in the snow and ice and when its warm again it makes no compromises in the dry and wet. And if I decide to sell the car I've only added to the value... or if I get my wife a VW passat or another audi I've got an extra set of wheels.

Personally I think the fact that we have the most amazing all weather cars is great. In the summer we can launch like crazy bastards in the rain, and with snow tires we can traverse roads with ease when the ice falls. Don't compromise, get snows if you plan on driving in it.
