Default Am I Losing a CV Joint?

I have an '00 S4 with 86,000 miles (glorious fun) on it. This morning I noticed a thumping sound from the right front. This only occurs when coasting in or out of gear. Once load (throttle) is applied, there is no sound. This happens at any speed (I tried a range of 80 mph to 25 mph) and appears to be getting worse over the short period I had to drive it today.

The boots are fine and there is no visible damage to the driveline, wheels, or tires. Is this a bad CV joint or something else?

I fear this is payback for calling my car bulletproof!

Default CV joints usually produce vibration under load when going bad.

You sure it's not a bad tire?

Default I swapped tires on that side (back to front) and the

thumping remained in the front. Net, I don't think it is a tire. Any other ideas?

Default Inner cv joints make the vib under load, the outer usually make a clicking noise. They are

constructed differently and exhibit different symptoms when each fail. Try checking the driveshaft cv joints. It has cv joints at each end and a u-joint in the middle. Mine went dry and made a load dependent noise that, for whatever reason sounded like it was coming from the right front. You can check them by twisting the driveshaft relative to the yoke in the output shaft of the trans and the pinion in the rear end. If there is any play, I would suggest replacing both of them.
