Started the car and backed out of garage this morning - stepped out of the car to check the garage door and noticed this wierd sound coming from the engine area. Kind of like the noise made blowing across a pop or beer bottle. It wasn't steady, but it was there more than not there. You could easily hear it 10 feet away from the car. Pop'd the hood up but couldn't tell where the noise was coming from other than it was not on the top of the engine. I drove the car and did not hear any strange noises or notice any difference in performance or how the car idled / ran. I got out at my destination to listen some more and the noise was gone completely. It wasn't that cold this morning - about 30 deg. Is it anything to worry or wonder about?

This was not a typical cold weather noise that I have heard other motors make. I have started cars at more than -40 below 0 and the noises just make you cringe. This was an air type sound - not a hiss as in air escaping but more like a sick note on a horn of some type.
I am real curious how the turbos are going to react to temps in the -20 to -30 ranges.

hehe..i hear ya...never been down to -40...but have started the S4 in about 0 to -5 degrees F...and honestly it sounded the same as it did around 20-30 degrees F. My guess is at low temps lubrication of the turbos suck really bad and it would be a good idea to stay off boost until the oil warms up if at all possible. not sure waht kind of sound you are hearing though...maybe some of the colder weather people can help you out...i think a few p[eople here are form MN and MI...

The water temp comes up real fast and there is heat in the car pretty fast - a HUGE plus up here. I am amazed at how long it takes the oil to get up to temp - it seems like 8 to 10 miles and it hasn't been that cold yet. I'm running 0w30 Mobil1 - but I am sure even that will get thick in the dead of winter. I asked the dealer about a block heater and they just looked at me with this deer in the headlight expression on their face and said they didn't know.
Any idea how hard it is to stay out of the boost for 10 miles or so several times a day?! ;-)

even here in MAss...maybe 5-10 minutes or so depending on what kind of drive it is...you have my frustrations just to a greater extent...my opinion however is once the needle starts to leave the dead left (150 i think) its close enough to start getting on boost a little...below the 150 line....who knows..it could be 145 degrees or 45 degrees. hmm...i don't know about anyone here using a block heater...a garage would be nice though...hehe...where are the MN and MI folk when you need em?

the noise came only when it was cold, and went away after about a mile. It was a howl-type noise too and I'm pretty sure I didn't have turbo on that ;-)
I also noticed that the A4 burned a bit of oil. Perhaps that was slightly related. Could be a bad oil pump trying to slurp up cold oil?
