Any oil cooler performance testimonials out there?

Maybe a little early but...anyone have quantitave results on oil coolers they have added? I live in waaaay south GA, and it is one of those things I am trying to get a jump on before the heat comes. Any reason I shouldn't just get a $150-$200 kit from permacool instead of the $450 one that is running around out there. I have seen the Tech article with the RS4 OC swap - is that car still among us? How about wrapping the oil lines w/thermal shield - any one done that one? TIA

I'm in Cal, and had a problem of Oil always running hot in summer (but never coolant), it was easy to get it to 250F.
I did the RS4 OC and found running temps dropped by at least 25, and the oil warm-up time was just exactly the same.
The upside
- works as advertised
- the very snug fit under the main radiator
The downsides:
- the price (RS4 was double)
- it is a real biotch to install !!!
Most of the kits have a thermostatic valve that only forces flow through the OC when the Oil is hotter than 180F.
The only place you may need to wrap oil lines with heat shield is on passenger side Turbo oil supply line - it runs right next to the exhaust manifold which gets VERY hot. The other alternative is to do the Induktion oil lines which can be routed differently.
If you do run the RS4 OC then note that I thought it wise to wrap the *Hot* Oil supply line as it run right next to the steering fluid cooling line. Described in my tech note.

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1902882.phtml</a

I played around with one this past summer, once it gets hot again, I will work out the details...

even when the oil temp gets real high on the track, it only takes one cool-down lap to get it back to normal.
