Serial cable is not compatible with APR ECUx. You need USB.

Default I'm using my HEX-COM serial cable with no issues whatsoever.
Also, I know Mark P uses a KEY-COM serial cable which works fine.

Haven't heard of anyone having issues with serial cables. USB cables on the other hand... (sorry Doc!)

Default Who to buy the cable from? I've got an unused copy of ECU-X sitting on the shelf collecting dust.
Just need a cable. Did'nt want to give APR a hundred bucks for one.

Default If you plan on using VAG-COM, get a VAG-COM cable. Unfortunately those are more than $100.
If you are just using it with ECUx, I'd say get one of the cheap generic ones (think they can be had for $30-40) or make your own. There's a tech article about how to do that somewhere out there.

Default If your laptop has serial ports I'd stick with those. They seem to be less problematic with ECUx.
If not, then you are stuck using USB.
