Anyone ever tried "notched Bilstein" shocks with the grooves HIGHER than the factory perch?

I'm curious of such a setup since the factory Bilstein sport shock coupled with an H&R sport spring (or really any other aftermarket spring) will lower the car more than 1 inch (roughly 1.5" from what I've heard). It seems that all of the "notched Bilsteins" (i.e. Neuspeed Bilsteins or ones from AWE now) have their extra grooves set BELOW the factory perch. This makes sense for people that wish to couple the Bilsteins with stock shocks. But this would be too low for people that want to couple with aftermarket springs (like H&R) because even going with the factory Bilstein sport setup and H&R springs would lower about 1.5". So why go lower. But, why NOT go higher!?
I've been told that you can make the grooves ABOVE the factory perch so that you could, theoretically, run aftermarket springs but not lower the car more than about 1 inch. Anyone tried this? Would it be bad for the shock?

The default Bilstein perch heights put the rear of the car much lower than the front with some spring combinations. Consequently, I used a lower groove in the front and a higher one in the rear to even things out.
At the time, ECS cut the grooves only lower by default so I had to request something different (which they easily acommodated). Not sure how they do it now.
