on the driver's side speaker, the frequencies in the voice range are distorting (although i can hear it during music too). It almost sounds like what you hear coming out of a bad fast food drive-up speaker phone. Is that indicative of a blown speaker?

Yep, on my A6 had a rear drivers side speaker go a few years ago. Replaced under warranty. :- )

Blown both. Distortion is a sure sign. Warr. covered them.
