Default 2.7T oil filter is already larger than old stock 1.8T its about the same size as new filter...

you can since the stock heat exchanger and tthreading are the same if you want

Is the pressure relief valve set to the same pressure on the 1.8T filter as on the 2.7T?

Default The relief valve pressure is slightly less on the 1.8T filter but if you change your oil regularly

it shouldn't be an issue.

Default Press relief valve comes into play at cold start and at WOT/high rpms - oil will bypass the filter.

Might not cause any significant extra wear on engine, but ideally you want the oil to actually get filtered as much of the time as possible. That is why brands like Fram suck so bad - very low bypass pressure and the oil ends up bypassing (not getting filtered) majority of the time.

If you oil filter's media gets clogged and it bypasses, you are already in big trouble...
