Default Anyone run thinner oil in New England winter?

I like the oil heater idea a few posts down. But I was thinking for the type of use my car gets in winter, a thin oil would do nothing but help. The S gets no long distance use from Nov to Mar, only a 25 min off highway commute. I generally don't even swap APR programs out of stock mode.

Default Too thin an oil won't protect the turbos...

0W40 is really the best of both worlds as it pours like a 0 weight oil when cold but protects the engine (and turbos) like a 40 weight oil (or so the marketing would have you believe).

Mobil lists the pour point of their 0W40 at -54°C (-65°F)... I HIGHLY doubt you'll see any temps that low in NY!

Default so Dave......are you suggesting to run 0W-40 rather than the 30....

I'm about 1,500 miles from the next change....have been running Amsoil 0w-30 since 25K miles (38K miles now)

Default Hmmm... I'm a firm believer in the 0w20 that I run...

FWIW... and no I won't get into an Oil discussion.

Default M1 0W40 seems to break down to the equivalent of a 30W oil...

according to the oil forum geeks.

I have been using 0w30 too (Mobil1). Why 0w40?

Default 0-20 is as thin as the 0-40 at low temps.. so it's same in that regard..

the 40 gives a better viscosity at higher temp ( normal runing temp of the engine) pour point for 0-20 is -57 degrees and for 0-40 is -54 degrees (3 degrees is nothing).
just another thought

I run 0W40. It meets the specifications listed in our owners manual (M1 0W30 does not).
