Anyone who has removed the ashtray - can I cut a hole in the back (behind the part that pops out)?

Yes!!! I took mine out completely and put my turbo timer/ignition there.
It is not an easy piece to remove but once taken out, there is quite a bit of space. You need to remove both the radio and temp unit first.
