Default DON'T sand it!

Just wash it with some dishwashing soap, wait for it to dry, then rub compound over it a few times until it is diminshed or goes away, then wax the area.

Default If he can't catch it with his fingernail, that will work.

If his fingernail does catch it, you'll get nowhere with the rubbing compound.

Worth a try, and it can diminish the effect of the scratch from the shallow scratches on the side of the deep one (if that makes sense).
