I just bought an '02 S4 last week with mileage at just under 82k. Noticed the next suggested oil change is 02/06/2010 at 90,355...with non-synthetic Castrol GTX! Getting ready to replace with Mobil1 0W-40.
Thoughts on the 10k oil change interval for the GTX???

the epa charges car companies based on the total waste produced by the vehicle over its lifetime. they then redefined lifetime to make it be 100k and sealed up the trans and coolant saying you never need to change it and put the o/c interval at 10k. this way it survives thru the warranty period afterwhich they dont care.
while oil stays 'good' for 10k or 5k miles it gets full of crud which ends up clogging the pcv system, which then starts the valve covers and cam seals leaking. the injectors get clogged because of the high soot content of the pcv getting jammed back into the injectors or vapoizing off of the intake when the cars off. and the oil gets sludged up, turbos get worn out.
the 3000 mile oil change is still the best thing to do.

Read the oil analysis reports posted by users here and you may change your mind. Plenty of tests done after 7K, 8K or higher intervals (on synthetic oil) and the results were very positive. Many of the analysis reports said the owners could try slightly longer intervals.
