Default Audi Oil Filters? Service manager said that Audi filters have a "check valve" on them to maintain

pressure when the car is off, and that's why they cost approximately $25. He said that there's only one or two aftermarket oil filters he's seen with a check valve and they cost $20-$22.

Thoughts on that? And what the heck is a check valve?

Default check valve will keep the oil from draining back to it's lowest point. Meaning...

more oil on demand when starting.

But this is the first time I have ever heard of a check valve being in our oil filters....

Default I think a "check valve" is also referred to as an "anti-drainback valve"

It's function is to keep oil in the filter when the engine is shut off.

AFAIK, most aftermarket oil filters include an anti-drainback valve. See the Oil Filter Study linked below for some interesting oil filter reading.

Personally, I would recommend picking up a 5-pack of the OEM filters from Clair Parts for $50.<ul><li><a href="http://www.frankhunt.com/FRANK/corvette/articles/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html">Oil Filter Study</a></li></ul>

The Audi filter contains an "oil retention valve" and a "bypass valve". I wouldn't be a cheapskate

Default I got a Mann that had the exact body and color as OEM, internally it also looked identical.

Looks to me like Mann manufactures the filters for Audi.

Default He may be referring to a bypass valve as Toy_Guy pointed out there are two valves.

Almost all modern oil filters have oil retention valves to keep oil in the block when shut off, and not let it all drain back into the oil pan. The Audi filter and some other filters as well have a bypass valve which bypasses the oil filter in extreme pressure situations as to not limit flow to the hot turbos. Clairparts has em for reasonable prices. Definitely worth it at least until out of the warranty period.

Default The DSM guys have figured out that many filters do not have such a valve, and because of it the oil

drains down and you get noisy lifters on start up.
