im gona intall some subs in my car using the signal from the rear speakers i was thinking eith 2x12" or 3x10" either alpin type r's or jl audio W7's which configuration would give me the best sound??

Definitely the JL's. The W7's are by far one of the best subs on the market. The problem is cost. I'm not sure about the 10's, but the 12W7's are going for about $650-$750 each. I was going to put 1 12W7 in my car, but I opted to put in one 12inch Kicker L7 Solobaric w/ kicker ported box. I would recommend JL's for anyone as long as they are W3's or above. I've had 2 10w6's and three 8w6's and they are great subs. The don't require a lot of space in a sealed box either.

I demoed a single 10w7 in a 1.2 cu sealed box in my trunk. This single 10 sounded a little louder, cleaner, and deeper than my single 12. Keep in mind my single 12 is an Eclipse Aluminum sub which in no slouch. I enjoyed the sound so much I am currently having a custom box built for 2 10w7 in a ported configuration. The W7 are not cheap! A single 10w7 will cost around $550 retail, and they are new so I don't expect you to find too much a discount. Also keep in mind you will need a good clean strong amp.
I've heard the alpine subs are OK, not comparable to the W7s but much cheaper. Good luck.

with a Phoenix Gold 600x2 Amp. It sounds pretty good considering the use of a line-out converter.

the speakers as well. 2 12 W7 will prob drown out the speakers if they are stock. Im running 1000 watts to each W7 and running Diamond Audios all around and the w7 still drowns it out I have to turn the subs down a bit for everyday and crank it if i have too. One of of the cables for the second w7 came loose one day and i was loke damn the speakers are keepign up with the sub and it sounds clean...then i realized hey where did all the bass go..so now i jsut turn the subs down a bit..quite a bit.
