Default Autoweek Quote on VW/Audi Marketing

The following quote was in the May 14th edition of Autoweek in the article on the Passat Wagon: "Most of these changes move Passat from its maintsream family car demeanor toward a more luxury-orientated position, the leading light in VW chairman Ferdinand Piech's push to make the VW brand compete with Mercedes-Benz while Audi chases BMW's customers."
Now I understand what they are trying to do - set up both VW and Audi for future failure! I can see the droves of Mercedes owners forming a line at the local VW dealer now. I wonder if the Benz-killers they create will have the flower slot like the Beetle! Piech must have come up through the technology ranks, not the marketing organization.

Default I can see Audi chasing BMW but VW for MB?

You're right, up through the technology ranks. You can scale a brand down but you can't scale a brand up. He needs to ask why Honda formed Acura, Toyota - Infiniti, etc. I can see the CM480 Beetle now...

Default VW is great competition for MB....

NOT!!!! When VW decides to compete in the Luxo class, it has to do the following:
1) offer better incentives (warranty of 2yrs 24k miles sukz)
2) change their styles of commercials (the newest one is ga'abage)
3) actually make the car in Germany (echo en mexico crap has gotta go)
4) pick their own style of car (STOP copying from Audi!!!)

Just my $.02

Default One thing to keep in mind...

These other companies were lesser and formed these luxury classes, unlike Audi which was bought by VW. Audi is the true parent company being that it was founded in 1909 and VW was founded in 1935

August Horsch = Founder of Audi
Ferdinand Porsche = Founder of VW
Frank Lloyd Wright = Father of modern architecture

Default You mean how MCI is the "true parent" of WorldCom?

I think most business majors and lawyers would disagree with you there.

Default you aren't following me

I was referring to how Nissan made Infinity, Toyota made Lexus... Audi was not made by VW it was purchased by them. Just as MB bought Chrystler, that's all.
