Default AWD, RWD, and FWD handling characteristics?

I am confused about this topic so here goes. If RWD represents the perfect balence for driving characteristics, does the S4 and its AWD exceed that or is it a compromise to excell in dry and wet circumstances? Also why does a car ie Integra get such high marks on the skidpad? Actually better than ours? Is not the balence of FWD make for worse handling? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Default What about

overall weight, front/rear weight balance, ride height, suspension, wheels?

I think these have alot to do with the overall handling of any car.

Default Tires are the most importent....

The true sports car layout is RWD or MR, but FWD cars has came a long way too. Honda does such a good job on FWD cars that it makes some RWD car makes cry.

The layout is important but as BSM said there are others forces at play here that can make a RWD car handle like **** and cars like Prelude or Intagra that kickes *** even it has the cheaper, and more street layout of FWD.

AWD was developed to help improve aviliable traction at any given time. But it has some draw-backs that needed to get worked out in the comming years. Thats why hard-core sports cars are still mostly RWD or MR. Maybe one day Audi, Subaru or Mitsubishi can develop a AWD system thats so powerful that makes using AWD a no brainer.
