warping just a bit after welding, as it would have been easy to assume it was just a structural issue.

But we had faith in the person that was in charge of the manufacturing process back then.
There have been a few issues that have surfaced since then that I had to put my forensics hat on for. After several hundred samples of these products going out the door and no more failures, it seems that my diagnosis and fixes of the issues were successful.
Let's face it: no manufacturing company has a zero failure rate, but there are some that take no steps to fix the issues and keep dodging their own warranties or they just eat the failures and keep sending out new product.
Given how labor intensive our products can be, I opted to spend the time to perfect them, instead of continually warranty them.
Plus, the install labor on some of our products, such as this one, are so high that you never want to put your customer in the situation of having to eat labor, as that never makes them happy.

people *do* seem to hold you guys to a higher standard probably means that they feel that your standards are superior in the first place. There's my "glass is half-full" take for the day. ;-)

that's great. Now we have data that points to the many failures as being a flawed manufacturing process er should we say "backroom welding".
That's good to know..
Decent stuff, some ugly, but overall the end result serves the customer and the company best.
Good luck

What the heck does that mean?
Tory, have ever taken the virtual tour of our facility?
http://awe-tuning.com/pages/facility_tour/index.cfm
There's nothing "backroom" or amatuer about our facility, and I know that from actually visiting a lot of our competitor facilities.
I suspect that you have a skewed view of the aftermarket, and assume that we are all small time backroom enthusiasts in tiny shops like some of the places you have seen firsthand yourself.
This is a $30 billion per year industry. To compete in it anymore, you can't be small time, unlike years ago.
