As a previous A4 owner I never thought I'd say this but when I see a B5 A4 on the road today they stand out to me as dated. However, I don't have the same reaction when I see a B5 S4. The S4 styling seems a little more timeless. Just me?

Many car manufacturers run a model for 8-10 years before changing it.They do minor changes along the way, but a full model change seems to wait. While some run 5 years. Audi seems to change them way too often. This makes you "feel" like a car is dated faster than it may really be.
Certain colors and trim packages may enhance the effect. (The reason you don't think the S4 looks as dated as the A4)

it looks way old-fashioned, especially when it doesn't have the HID/xenon lights. The B5 S4 doesn't look as old becuase it's a little more muscular/aggressive looking, especially with mods. Just my opinion, yours may differ.

I agree. The B5 A4 design does look a little dated but the B5 S4 has a classic look. They say the exterier changes (17 avus rims, underbody kit, grill) between the two are subtle but to me they make a huge difference!
Besides, the B5 S4 started the whole "S" line so auto/import enthusiasts will always recognize it. Right?

Some bodywork does a lot towards keeping a car looking good through the years.
