Is it better to run slightly thicker oil during summer?

compressed (as in becoming solid), but that wasn't the question and it doesn't relate to oil in an engine unless you never change your oil the life of your car.

5w-30 and 0w-30 are the same viscosity at normal engine temp (which is about the same summer or winter). Really you just have to worry about the first number for seasonal changes. The 0w-30 will give you better starting in the colder winter weather.
The 5w-30 should be better in the summer because it has less engineered multi-visocsity and should hold up better than a 0w-30. (in reality both will hold up great for 99% of the driving you do)
