Which are better-slotted or cross drilled rotors? Why?

because cross drilling allows cracks to form (spiderwebs) fairly easily...many race cars use cross-drilling because they throw away the rotors after EVERY RACE so as long as they can last a few hours, the ventillation benefits are supreme.
With slotted...there aren't any perforations which can lead to cracks but there IS a channel for the air like a duct. Keep in mind...and something most people don't realize...is that a properly vented disk draws ALOT of air from the WHEEL side not just from the front.
So drilled are "better" from a racing standpoint and slotted are "better" from a durability/street standpoint.

if you never get your brakes REALLY hot (like track days) your chances of cracking the rotors are pretty small.
I had the drilled rotor off the ALMS "M3" in my hand...you shoulda seen that thing, if I'd dropped it probably would have shattered.
You are NEVER going to get an S4's brakes THAT hot unless you are a madman! hehehehe.

I recall from the Road and Track article that compared the ALMS Porsches and M3's that both cars were running slotted rotors. I thought that was really interesting given the conditions those cars run in. I wonder if they use a different rotor for endurance vs. sprint races.

x-drilling actually weakens break rotors. this was evident in believe in the late late 80's 911's where the rotors were notorious for cracking. also the newest edition of the M3 was supposed to have x-drilled brakes, but due to the same reason, BMW went with slotted.
