Default I had mine grooved ....

...and used the factory setting which was perfect for my taste and handling (although w/H&R springs). So didn't even use the 'grooves' ... Anymore drop with 18"s and it would be officially 'slammed' in my perspective... would be a bit too much for me. Based upon feedback from AWers and friends, upgrade the springs as well...

Default many people in the A4 forum run their OEM sport springs w/grooved bilsteins on the lowest setting

and are quite happy with the results (mild lowering, better handling, good ride).

Define "mild lowering". 1", 1/2" ?
