Default yeah. that is what i thought. maybe you do have more problems, or maybe you have bad valve cover

gaskets that have been leaking over time, and you blew a turbo and are discovering both in conjunction, but i am doubting it is this with the clarification you just gave.

i would do a leak-down test to see if you have something really wrong.

Default Valve cover leaking could get into engine?

If the valve covers leaked ALOT would it be able to get into the cylinders (past the spark plugs)? There is oil in the cylinders burning (black coating on pistons). It's enough to mosquito fog people on the highway.

I wouldn't really think that would be possible, but like I said, I'm no engine guru.

Default have you ever seen a head removed from a 2.7? pistons and valves will always have carbon = black

no matter how much detergent is in the fuel.

if you lost more than a qt of oil that quickly i think it's a turbo seal.

did you uncouple the lower intercooler hoses and check for oil?

how many miles?
chipped?
do the turbos make noise?

Default Every engine has black pistons after they have ran, do you mean.....

there is a thick buildup of goo? The smoke is probably the oil burning in the hot exhaust/cats. A lot of these engines push a little oil into the spark plug cavity. The oil around the spark plugs will not make your car smoke from the exhaust.

What was the temperature when this happened? Maybe a PCV? How many miles do you have?

I agree with everyone else, it is probably one of your turbos. When the seal goes bad, the pressurized oil pushes past into the hot exhaust and starts smoking. Good luck.

Default take out the spark plug and then it'll just get down in there. it was a suggestion based upon

the fact that the question you were asking was a pretty easy one to answer, but you seemed to be missing something, so i was basing possibilities off of that. it sounds like you need to take it to a dependable, knowledgeable person.

Default From what I can tell...

... Black go on top of then pistons.

The oil is burning out of the exhaust, lot of it. I don't think the amount that is burning could get down there from the spark plugs to the pistons.

Car has 172k.

From my understanding if it's the PCV oil will be in the intake right? Is there a failure mode with the PVC that won't allow the positive pressure out causing too much pressure in the system forcing oil out of the valve covers (into the spark plug wells). Also causing too much oil pressure somewhere into the engine (valve guides).
