Once my S4 goes bye bye. =( I'm going to need another car, and something that's not too expensive. I don't mind wrenching on a car, and this will not be a daily driver, but it will be my only car. I like the idea of the 944 because once I'm out of school, I can gut the thing and run in PCA club races. I think the E36 will be a touch more comfortable and obviously newer. What would you guys do? The 944s are considerably cheaper, but I figure I'm going to have to throw some money into any 944 that I find, so they will likely be equivalent.

recommend that you purchase a 951 (944 turbo) and NOT a 944 S2. If you plan on tracking the car, the 951 has MUCH more upside than a 944 S2.
Many 951 fanatics try and get a 951S (low mileage ones are RARE). The 951S has 250 hp as opposed to the 220 HP in the standard 951. Also, the 1987 and later year 951s, have a different wheel offset than 1986 model (there are many 1986 models on the mkt). Thus, u can use P-911 and P-Boxster wheels on 1987, and later year 951s, w/o using spacers.
If u r looking for a sedan (to carry folks) like the S4, then the M3 is the way to go. I feel that a stock E36-M3 has better handling than a stock S4 (I owned the rare 1997 4 dr sedan M3).
Using an E36-M3 as a track car, not unless u supercharge, or turbo-charge the sucker. In my opinion, the stock S4 has stronger pull off the line.
A chipped S4 will EMBARASS a non-modded E36-M3. A chipped 951 (my 1986 951 is chipped w/flow thru cat, electric boost controller, etc.) will destroy a stock E36-M3, and handle as well, or better in the curves. I think it could more than hold its own against a chipped S4, and you are talking about cars that are 15-18 yrs old!
My former E36-M3 was a fun car, but I like my S4 better - plus it has greater upside - in terms of mods. If u want REAL fun - get the 951 (944 turbo).
Check out Rennlist and vendors like
SpeedforceRacing, or LindseyRacing.com (to get an idea on mods).
If you want to see my 951 - check out my pic poster here on Audi World, I also have a pic poster on Rennlist (the gallery). Hope this helps.
