The serial PCMCIA card should work... the keyspan USB->serial will most likely work. ross-tech.com says they don't recommend any USB-serial converters (they recommend a $110 PCMCIA Serial), but obdtool.com says the keyspan usb->serial adapter works.

The USB VAG is much better.
1) It doesn't use an obsolete interface (one advantage you're painfully aware of).
2) It's faster for logging
3) I think it actually does a bit more. In any event, the serial version is headed towards obsolesence
4) The USB version doesn't need to be tied to a particular laptop with a key that Ross-Tech generates for that laptop. While they're pretty helpful in doing swaps for you, you won't be able to lend the thing out (w/o also lending the laptop) and it's a hassle to change over. On the USB version, you just plug it in and it works (since there's a security dongle built in to the USB version).
Uwe will give you a discount on an upgrade. If you haven't use the serial one, he might let you return it for credit. The USB versions aren't that much more.

They didn't have a dongle on the serial a while back, but I see one is available now. And since the dongle and the "intelligent interface" are probably allied features, the refresh rates are probably the same.
That said, having owned a VAG-COM longer than any other customer of Ross-Tech (I believe I was Uwe's first customer), I still like USB. I had serial for a couple of years and USB about the same. Few laptops have serial and carrying around extra junk (like a serial adapter) is a PITA. Even if you have a serial port now, odds are that your next laptop won't.
