I just purchased a new 2001 s4 and it is fantastic. I am a little unsure on the break in
proceedures. A friend of mine claims the engine is
broken in from the factory, and I should drive it hard. I'm not so sure about this advice. I also
don't want to baby this car, afterall it is an s4
any suggestions?

The engine needs to be broken in, it is new, and the main bearings are tight. Be very gentle for the first 100 miles, after that, avoid heavy footing the pedal until 1000 miles are past. Try not to over-rev the engine, but more important, do not "lug" the engine, i.e., make it pull hard at low RPMs, this can be really hard on the bearings before they wear in.
