I think you're missing one detail..
The intake cams have square slots on them that you use to align the chain. The key slot on each intake cam aligns to a different point on the sprocket. One slot aligns to a groove on the chain sprocket while the slot on the other intake cam aligns to a tooth.
When people say "xxx links between the cams" what are you really referring to.. when the keyway slots are slightly different on each intake cam?
