can anyone explain the advantage of having a 8.5 width over a 7.5 when buying wheels

i can assume the obvious, but with all these wheels available for our cars in 7.5 instead of 8.5 or 8, it makes me feel like there is no advantage at all and i am assuming wrong.
Wider is better because there is more contact patch, and assuming you don't go too wide to the point of rubbing, you can't go wrong right?
TIA

the wheels are now taking the blunt of the weight instead of the tire....but also if i had 18.5, i would go bigger than 225 anyways.

I went from the stock 17x7.5 et 45 wheels to 17x8.5 et 35 wheels, I reused my old tires, On corners that I'd be pushing to take at 60mph before, they'd hook and go, not a peep. I wasn't expecting a grip increase, just wanted to replace my bent stock rims.
