Default Can everyone who is having problems shifting into 1st & 2nd please tell me there stories.......

I brought my car into Audi (Legend in Amityville) and they told me they could not find a problem. I want to go in with evidence of the problem so they can't just send me home.

I have been experiencing a problem getting into 1st all the time (the cold weather might be a reason), Going into 2nd from 1st (at times) doesn't let me in (grinding) when I do a fast start, I also have trouble downshifting into 2nd at speeds of 50 and above.

Any information would be appreciated

Thanks,
Kevin

Default are you downshifting to 1st?

or from a stop? From a stop I have no problems..
it's from 2nd to 1st that is hard getting into because of the synchros.. I usually double clutch.. or go to 2nd from a rolling stop..
2nd at speeds 50 and above?? are your revs high enough?? I usually just downshift to 3rd if I want power.. I never touch 2nd gear if I'm going that fast..

Hey, 50mph is only ~5500rpm in 2nd, what's wrong with that? ;-P

There is NO reason to go down into 2nd at those RPM's or above.

Default No kidding. You can be doing 55mph in 3rd already by the time you downshift and begin accelerating!

My personal ceiling on downshifting I won't go over is:

1st, ~20mph
2nd, ~45mph
3rd, ~82.5mph (yes, 82.5! =])
4th, ~110mph
5th, never been an issue!

Default I just emailed a friend...

and alerted him to your post. He's having the same problem (on his A4 though) and the dealer is replacing a whole bunch of stuff under warranty. Hopefully he'll reply to your post and explain the whole deal.

Default You're doing things the S4 tranny isn't meant to do.

S4 tranny is all about smoothness. 1->2 and 2->3 shifts in particular can't be rushed. You'll be faster being smooth anyway.

And WTF are you downshifting into 2nd at 50mph for? You're a) going to kill the tranny and b) going to be *much* slower. You've got no power left at that point. Leave it in 3rd man!

Not only is the dealer right -- its not a problem -- but when you kill your transmission, they probably won't cover it.
