You don't need to know at what RPM you are to downshift!
You can hear and feel it from the car. There are more important things to look at when you're driving than how much RPMs your engine is at.
And also, mr Eric Fletcher is right, delay the downshift aas much as possible, downshift is only for getting into the right gear, for the need of power.

normally downshift at around 3k from feel because I can see the tach shoot up to 3k. If you don't have anything constructive to say, why bother?

Trannys are for moving the car, brakes for stopping it. Clutches and trannies cost a LOT more to replace than brakes!
