I have also mixed different brands and weights of synthetics. It's just a myth with today's oils. Virtually all oil additives are manufactured by only 2 companies, and if I recall, both of these companies say you can mix at will. [Check out www.lubrizol.com] It might have been different back in the days when synthetic first came out, but not anymore. You mean no one else has ever mixed up a custom batch of 7.5w-45 M1 (equal parts 0w-40 and 15w-50)?
It's not like mixing the various forms of coolant with their non-compatible chemistries. I say go for it, especially if it is just for topping up.
