Can someone please explain to me why my windshield wipers shake and studder when on?

In theory it makes sense, assumming it does the same thing for your windows as it does for paint.
I clayed my entired windshield and rain-x'ed one side of it, the claying was pretty effective by itself, the water tends to sheet off vs the beading you get from Rain-X or Aquapel. I still found the Rain-x more effective at lower speeds though.

I had this problem on many cars.....and tried clay, newspaper, polish, new blades, Rain-x, etc. Nothing worked, especially on my Acura.
I mentioned it to my mechanic and told him I either needed new wiper arms & springs or more tension forcing them down harder onto the windshield. He laughed and said he had been stumped by the same thing, and someone told him how to fix it.
It's simply the angle that the blade hits the windshield. If the angle is not right, they will chatter. But it's almost always just in one direction, and usually on the way up the windshield. That's how you can tell this fix will work.
Just get pliers or vicegrips (use felt underneath claws or you'll scratch the black paint on the arms), and grab down low on the arm, at skinny part. Then torque/twist the arm either towards the front or back of the car, so that you are changing the angle of the blade as it rests on the windshield in the resting position.
You'll know when you get it right, as it will not chatter at all, even when dry. If it chatters in the other direction while no longer chattering in original direction, you've angled it too far.
Of course, everyone else's comments about cleaning, Rain-X, etc. can't hurt either, but this was the fix for me on three different cars.
Good luck!
