Here is how the project went:
I decided to get a new laptop for this project, and for my overall use. I went with the Fujitsu 2120 I believe it is because it is tiny, but still has a bult in interchangable DVD/CDR-W drive and also a built in wireless LAN connection. All in all, it has been an awesome computer for me.
Other components were as follows:
7" VGA/AV Touch Screen
Travroute Copilot GPS 2003
Vag-Com stuff
Serial port PC Card
RF Remote control
misc wires and a port replicator
I threw around some mounting options for the screen, first thinking I may mount it in a custom dash pod above the center vents. Finally I decided to change out the stock radio for a Pioneer single din sized XM ready radio with a single disc CD. I had a custom face plate made, placing the head unit right above the AC controls, and the screen just above that. The screen extends higher than the stock radio, but with the custom face plate, I was able to accomplish this without cutting the console or the trim. It's hard to explain, but I'll post pictures when it's done.
The passenger side dash under the glove compartment is cleverly added to so that it comes down an exta 3" or so. It is done to look stock. Here, there is a slot with a wiring harness hidden inside. I pull the harness out, plug in to the computer, power, 2 USB's, PC card, VGA, Mic, and audio out. Then the computer slides into the slot and is locked down with the cd drive facing out towards the cabin. It is the only exposed part of the PC, so you can insert discs and DVDSs. The computer then displays itself on the screen and is controlled by a RF remote control, or simply by touchscreen.
Capabilities? It's a PC, so you can do a whole lot. I have Voice and map Nav that I can prompt with my voice, DVD, I have around 2000 MP3s that I can play on my cars stereo system directly from the PC. I love the MP3 thing since I have a cable modem at home that downloads MP3's in a heartbeat. I can take voice notes in the car... blah, blah, blah. You get the picture. I run VAG-COM and VAG-SCOPE on the screen, and will soon have software that runs on screen guages like boost guage and so on. Obviously I'm doing the XM radio too.
Anyways, pictures to come in a few days. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask here or email me.
