You wouldn't want to bypass the coolant/oil heat exchanger that the oil filter attaches to because it uses hot coolant to warm the oil up faster. For some reason I only thought of it as cooling hot oil.
If you installed an oil/air oil cooler you could bypass it to prevent possible oil to coolant contamination but then the oil would take much longer to heat up, especially in the winter.
Does that sound right?

I admit I didn't search for info on this. I was thinking about it while trying to get the car warmed up before fats runs, and noticed it takes much longer for the oil to warm up (above the lowest reading) than the coolant.
From what I understand, the RS4 oil cooler installs a separate piece under the oil filter that does have a thermostat. I didn't realize the stock oil cooler has one.
