Changing Oil and Oil Filter....Need to change filter after only 2500 miles?

Is it OK to change only the oil vs the oil AND Filter? I had my 5K service and now I am at 7500 and would like to change oil again. But dont have access to Audi parts shop on the 4th of July. Also I know the capacity of the 2001 S4 is around 6.9qts w/ the filter change..what is it w/o?

why only change the oil?

I'm just curious about why to change it at 2500 intervals (after a track event maybe?).
I would think that changing only the oil wouldn't be that bad of a deal. You would have about 3/4 quart (guessing) of "old" oil left in the filter and filter housing.
I would say it'd be ok.
And BTW Audi, what's with charging 15 bucks for the damn filter???

Its actually pretty easy to change the oil and filter...:-) I just like to keep fresh oil in my car since the price of $2.99 a qt. at Target for Mobile1 0w-30 is worth the expense of changing frequently...plus I enjoy getting under the car and working.
