I have a 2001.5 S4 Tiptronic with GIAC ECU and transmission chip with 130,000 miles.
Got a check engine light a week ago so I plug my general OBD2 sensor in and it read P0741 translate to "Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off" I press clear and the CEL was gone but came back after 50 miles.
The car run fine with out any difference at all. The only difference I notice was the gas milage as it is slightly less MPG than normal.
I called the dealer and they said my Tranny is on the way out the door and suggested I replace it at $8500.
Do you guys have similar problems before? any suggestions?

Common problem with TIPS. Bad seal in the TC. Replacement TC's are available from many places for less than $1000. Then expect to pay $1000 or more to have it installed.

Yeah for 8500, you could:
Purchase a used tip transmission.
Get it "hardened" by 517, IPT, or 3zero3. Hell even L10 I think... (but why would anyone do that)
Then get that trans installed for about 1k.
If I had to toss numbers out there:
400-700$ for used tip trans.
500$ for shipping to a shop.
$5000 built trans.
500$ shipping back.
$1000 for install at a good indy.
$550 for a new TC.
Resell your current trans (which is fine, just the TC is shot for now unless you keep driving (heats up the trans fluid more and tends to cause issues))
