Chipping automatic tranny ...
Hi all,
I want to get a S4 as my winter car, I have two RWD cars and last winter here in NY I really struggled, I won't go into next one without AWD.
I need to get the auto tranny, since my family member might drive it sometimes.
My question is:
Can auto S4 handle the extra hp and torque from chipping?

The same transmission is used on a bunch of other cars, some up to 320 or so ft/lbs of torque. The stage-1 S4 is about 366 ft/lbs, so its beyond the range that the transmission is rated for, but not by a huge amount.
The explanation I heard (which makes sense) is that ZF rates the transmission for a certain very high number of miles (I heard 250k, but who knows), and obviously running at higher torque levels will shorten that life. Running stock and driving aggressively would have a similar affect, too.
I chipped mine, I'm not too concerned about it. If you're really concerned, word has it a company in NJ can retrofit the transmission for some obscenely high amount of HP and torque, Stage III+ level and beyond...
I have noticed a lot of "hunting" for gears which the tiptronic chips are supposed to fix, and at WOT in 5th at one point, I had it keep bouncing between fourth and fifth which was sort of bizarre.
--

it’s a risk but I’m doing it too..you get SO MUCH more performance with chipped tip.

about that 4th-5th hunting...
Garrett’s standard tip chip is supposed to fix that. I have the race chip which still has hunting at 4krpm in 5th gear. I talked to him about it and he said the tranny should actually learn it out if you let it do it for long enough.
Haven’t found a stretch of road where I can drive at 4krpm in 5th long enough to try it 8-)
