I recently picked up a 2000 S4, and have been reading about chips with interest. My understanding is that my S4 will run OK with standard unleaded, but performance will improve with premium fuel.
What are the drawbacks/consequences of chipping the engine? I'm aware that there might be warranty problems. Does chipping require premium fuel only?
I'm also planning on the UUC short shifter.

drawbacks are only two as far as I see, and the second one isn't really a drawback, just a reality: 1) unless you live where I do, your dealer will give you crap for having different firmware and deny warranty claims; and 2) the difference in performance between good gas and bad gas and cold weather and hot weather will be greater than with the stock programming.
