Chips add so much power to the S4, why isn't factory chip more aggressive? more

they left a LOT on the table, as far as the torque curve goes
and having an 8:1 CR doesn't help low-end torque
Of course, more HP will require a bigger Turbo
but it's still capable of more than the factory delivered it with

The S4 was marketed as competition for the M3 and I believe the ultimate goal was to create just enough hp to top the M3, performance wise. By adding more horsepower that what was needed, they would have taken away from their sales in other markets. Who would buy the 4.2 a6 if the 2.7t produced more hp? I fully expect the next S4 to push 330-340 hp, again, just barely topping the M3's numbers.

the stock 5 spd subaru tranny, can't take much more than 300hp
supposedly the new 6 spd in the STi can
but that's about $6K US , + shipping from Jp
and you'll still need a new clutch, Press Plate and drive shaft

Every 1-2 years car makers are forced to bump up the HP to encourage sales ... with a normally aspirated car there's not much you can do, short of VTEC (ick) or purposely detuning the first gen model. With forced induction, you get a few years out of a given generation engine w/o a major redesign. Pump up the boost, fix up some minor glitches and tweak the top 4 weak areas, and bang, 20-30 HP every two years without having to retool your production line.
BMW doesn't really have to worry since they have a built-in niche following who will always a) buy BMW because hey, its a BMW, and b) always lust after the latest model regardless of negligible performance increases.

that your sister's saab had more hp per liter. No flame here, but isn't your S4 faster? That's all that matters....if my car made 40hp/liter but ran like a flaming bat out of hell, then I'm happy. All that matters is how the car performs. Also, some stock S4 make more than 250/258. That number is definitly underated. Which is fine by me....keeps the insurance down. Shoot, why doesn't AoA rate it at 150hp.....hear that Allstate, my car is slow!
