Default Close encounter with highway FOD...hello guardian angel.

Driving home last night, my hood and windshield met with a fast moving object. It (not real sure what it was, highway was a little to crowded to stop short) bounced off the hood (gouging two grooves about 8" long), smacking into the base of the windshield breaking the passenger side wiper and turning the glass to powder, and then bounced off the middle of the windshield right in front of my face. Windshield is a mess and the hood is pretty ugle.

The lucky part is that if the object strike was two inches higher it wouldn't have deflected off the hood and windshield base and probably would have gone through the windshield and smacked me straight in the face...not pretty!

Except for being a little frightened, neither passenger or I was hurt at all. The damage is covered under my insurance, but I have to pay the %$#& deductable. I figure a new hood, windshield, and wiper...maybe some damage to the windshield base plastic molding too.

Not sure what the lesson here is. The object was unavoidable (barely saw it coming), I wasn't speeding or weaving, and the driving conditions were perfect. I guess, get up every morning, tell your family you love them and count yourself lucky for what you have.

Oh yeah, I remember hearing the S4 windshield is special order...any one have that part number? I'll try and post some pictures later.

Default Count your blessings!! About the windshield, last I heard it was pot luck

wether you get one with grey or green tint. Apparently both have the same Part #. Do a search on "windshield", you should find plenty of info.

Default Glad to hear your OK. :) Very scary when you hit something you don't see.....

I nailed a 30-40 pound vulture in a Vette doing about 110 a couple years back. The damn thing hopped out infront of me while eating Bambi on the side of the road. Detroyed the bumper, hood, and shattered the windshield. Scared the holy jebus outta me. The whole car seemed to explode out of no where. Not something I want to go through again.

Default wow. glad to hear noone was hurt. i can't believe that the windshield would be special order since

1) it's the same as the a4, and 2) you hear about these things cracking all the time.

hopefully you're get everything fixed up soon.

Default Similiar thing happened to me

I was driving on Rt 17 heading to Binghamton, and a piece of pipe (seemed like a elbow) came bouncing off the truck in front of me and smacked me right in front of me. I almost jumped into the passanger seat. Put a huge divot into my windshield. Lucky it didnt come through...

very scary...
