As discussed earlier I purchased a replacement display of EBay. Last night I repaired my cluster with no special tools. Obviously, a hot air rework station is the best way to remove the cable from the board. I found a low melting point solder "ChipQuick" that worked great. It may even be safer than the hot air tool. The entire process took me about three hours. Hell the hardest part was getting the dial pointers back to the correct zero position. I took a bunch of pictures and will do a nice DIY for the sight tonight. Thanks to everyone on the board for your help and suggestions.

I was a bit leery that it would be some cheap display but it looks as good as the original. Some have said the replacements made in china are too bright. The seller states that the display is original VDO OEM. Now I can't be 100 percent sure where this display was made. I can confirm it has the same makings as the OEM display and when powered up it looked identical.
Here is the eBay item No. 350152089713
I can tell you the seller was from the Netherlands and he was top notch. Here is a picture of the display. New display on the left.

That is what I remember from out correspondnace sometime ago. He got his LCD displays from China.
I think I have a lead in NYC that will do a very careful soldering job as well. He repairs ABS modules, which requires skilled soldering too.

....you're right - it's much safer than traditional hot air re-work. Just need to clean it up good after removal so it doesn't contaminate the new solder.
