Cluster/Pixel repair recommendations
I'm looking for recommendations for a service to repair a failing LCD display on my instrument panel. Need to turn the job around quickly as I'm trying to get it repaired before I sell my B5.
Alternately, if I were to buy a salvage cluster what would I need to do to integrate it into the car? Can I adjust the odometer etc using Ross/VAG tool?

thanks for the info.
I checked out module masters and they have suspended the service unfortunately (http://www.modulemaster.com/en/servi...t_clusters.php).

Not sure how good your soldering skills are... lol

I see there is someone (on eBay) that charges $200+... for that price you might as well by a used cluster. Do you have a VAG-COM? You will need that I believe.

I did my LCD repair last weekend. Followed the writeup in the Tech section for the most part. I just took my time, was careful, and had a very good magnifying glass for solder inspection. Took me under four hours including gathering up all the parts and tools, reading instructions again, testing, and cleanup. Total cost $125. You must be able to find some friend who can do some basic surface-mount soldering, right? If not, consider taking the disassembled cluster to an electronics repair shop for the 15 minute LCD swap.
As far as the writeup, it's very good. I did not cut the plastic holder as suggested, but instead removed the last couple needles - no big deal. Take pics beforehand of where the needles are at rest, with ign on (but not running), and with car running. Note how far to push them back down. And don't forget to remove the protective plastic film from the new LCD.
As an alternative to DIY, consider sending it to pixelfix.info. I talked with him a while back and was impressed with his business setup. Others had given great reviews too. I just decided that with my background (EE) I could do it myself and avoid being without the car for a few days.
I have no idea where one might find a good working cluster for anywhere near $200 as suggested. Audi re manufactured units are $650 and up (and UP!). Then requires dealer VAG-com too. Used ones will have some other odometer reading and probably still need a VAGcom reprogramming.

Don't know where you're at but these guys in Concord, CA did mine with the OEM lcd, not the too bright Chinese one for about $200. Very happy.
